I was reading about Netflix and what it’s like to work for them*, and I came across this slide:
“You seek what is best for Netflix, rather than best for yourself or your group”
Anyway, I’m fascinated by Netflix’s metadata schema. I just added an extension to my browser called Netflix Categories. So far, so good. There are, it seems, hundreds of different categories to choose from. My current favorites are “Deep Sea Horror Movies”, “Steamy Romantic Movies”, and “Experimental Movies“.
I always wonder about the people behind the categories. I wonder who decides which film gets to go into which genre. Or, does an algorithm do that? I also think about the descriptions of the film. Where does this information come from? Who supplies it? Is there a team of people watching movies all day long and coming up with descriptions? Where do I sign up?
And I think about the search engine. I think the world could benefit from an advanced search engine that exposed more of the metadata behind the films. What schema does netflix use? It’s probably proprietary, right? Whatever.
I just find the whole thing fascinating. End post.
*side note: “them” attributes being-ness to the company. I wonder why I did that?
